W.D. “Fred”
Roberts
W. D. “Fred” Roberts was
born in Lockhart, Texas, on April 19, 1926, to Winnie Kelley
Roberts and Fred O. Roberts. He passed away peacefully on Nov.
28, 2006, after a valiant battle with cancer.
Fred graduated from
Lockhart High School and enlisted in the U.S. Navy. He served
proudly as a Motor Machinist Mate on PC 817 in the Pacific. A
surviving shipmate described Fred as the strongest man he had
ever known, one he could always count on, and a man he was proud
to serve with.
Fred worked at Glosserman
Chevrolet prior to his military service and returned to his
trade as a mechanic after World War II ended. He was the
service manager at Glosserman’s for 33 years before opening his
own business – Fred Roberts Garage. After he was diagnosed with
cancer, he continued to work as often as he could, repairing
cars and lawnmowers and sharing early morning coffee with the
guys at the auto parts store next door.
Fred was married to Billie
Jo Cole on April 25, 1948 and they were blessed with two
daughters. He was devoted to his wife Jo and they were looking
forward to celebrating their 59th wedding
anniversary.
Fred was an avid and
passionate hunter. He spent part of the year preparing for deer
season and the rest hunting with “Squirt” and their family.
Friends and clients always knew if the shop doors were closed in
the winter, he was hunting.
Fred was a member of the
American legion Henry T. Rainey Post and the Veterans of Foreign
Was Post 8927.
He is survived by his
loving wife Billie Jo; his daughters, Betsy Hallmark and her
husband Bob of Plano and Linda Roberts of Santa Fe, N.M.; his
loving grandchildren and great-grandchildren; Robin hallmark of
Irving; Addis Hallmark and his wife Stephanie and their
children, Kylie, Ethan, and Mason, all of McKinney; and Daniel
Roberts of Lockhart. We will all miss his presence, his jokes
and his hand-made gifts.
The family wishes to thank
Dr. Samson Jesudass, Dr. Robert Kilbourn and the staff of the
Southwest Regional Cancer Center, and the doctors and staff at
the Center for Cancer Care in San Marcos. Special mention and
grateful thanks to the nurses and caregivers of CTMC Hospice. |
