Martha Elizabeth Gerdes

Martha Elizabeth Gerdes gently passed on Friday afternoon, June 1, 2007, after several years of battling cancer.  She was 83.  Everyday was positive and her greeting was always, “I’m doing fine”.  We know she was resting in Jesus’ arms everyday and now she is walking with Him side by side, hand in hand.

Liz was born to Martha and Allie B. Brown, August 23, 1923, in Kingsville, Texas.  She graduated from Texas A&I University.  Liz married Jack Delton Gerdes, M.D. and resided in Houston.  She was a school room-mother, little league team-mother, and Cub Scout and Girl Scout leader for all the children.  She was also active and a leader in the Texas Women’s Medical Auxiliary, Texas United Methodist Women, and was a volunteer at Austin Seniors Center until just a few years ago.  At her church, she was a member of the Dorcus SS class, participated in Mission Trips, taught Body Recall Exercise, and witnessed two granddaughters married there.

Liz is survived by her younger brother, Sammy Lee Brown; children, Jack Delton Gerdes, Jr., Debbie Lee Hall, and Allie Lynn Gerdes; grandchildren, Cameron Boone Gerdes, Cristen Nicole McCarroll (Gerdes), Erin Elizabeth Jeffers (Hall), and Lindsey Leigh Hall; numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives, and a host of friends.

Graveside Services will be at 9:00 a.m., Tuesday, June 5, 2007, at Cook-Walden/Forest Oaks Memorial Park.  Memorial Services to follow at 11:00 a.m. at Tarrytown United Methodist Church, 2601 Exposition Blvd., Austin, TX.  A Reception and “Going Home Celebration” will follow immediately in the church fellowship hall.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund will be established in her name to support mission efforts of the church.  Tribute gifts may be made to Elizabeth Gerdes Mission Fund, Tarrytown United Methodist Church. 2601 Exposition Blvd., Austin, Texas, 78703.  (512) 472-3111 or www.tarrytownumc.org.
